From testing to approval
LEREM is approved by the French Ministry responsible for Transport to issue approvals for packaging design types.
As part of this approval, the laboratory carries out the tests required by the regulations, prepares test reports and processes approval applications. LEREM also renews certificates and inspects the manufacture of approved packaging on production sites.
The laboratory provides testing, approval and production monitoring for approved packaging.
Definition and performance of the required tests, preparation of the report and issue of the approval certificate.
Drop, hydraulic pressure, leakproofness, stacking and C1 corrosion tests. LEREM also tests IP2 packages.
Certificate renewal and on-site inspection of the manufacture of approved packaging.
Regulatory tests
The tests depend on the type of packaging and the applicable regulations. They include:
Impact resistance
Performance under load
Internal pressure resistance
Exposure to water
Integrity check
Classification and compatibility
The approval process
Identify the packaging, the product to be transported and the applicable regulations.
Determine the samples required and the test conditions.
Perform the required tests and record the results.
Prepare the test report and, if the results comply, issue the approval certificate.
Applicable regulations
LEREM carries out its tests with reference to UN recommendations and the regulations applicable to each mode of transport.
Transport by road and rail
Packaging design, testing and marking
Transport by sea
Requirements for shipments by sea
Inland waterways
Requirements for inland waterway transport
Transport by air
Specific requirements for air shipments
After approval
Once approval has been issued, manufactured packaging must remain identical to the design type tested. LEREM carries out production inspections on site and renews the certificates.
If a material, component or manufacturing process changes, the laboratory determines whether additional tests are required.
LEREM’s approval also covers fibreboard boxes used as single packaging and as the outer packaging of combination packaging, provided that the inner packaging is not made of plastic.
Contact LEREM to define the tests required and prepare your approval application.
